Chapter 377
After Ray swung by the hospital in Oak Lake to see his son, he decided to have a little get-together at his place that night with two police chiefs and the lead detective working on Ben's poisoning case.
In the cozy Fisher family living room, the three men greeted Ray with a unified, respectful "Mr. Ray." Despite Ray's high-ranking position, he never put on airs. With a slight nod, he motioned for them to take a seat, "Please, make yourselves comfortable."
The room was spacious and inviting, featuring a long mahogany coffee table set with an elegant porcelain tea set. Ray sat facing the trio, with Joshua settled to his right.
Instead of sitting right away, the men turned to Joshua, greeting him individually, "Evening, Joshua." Once Joshua courteously acknowledged them, they took their seats opposite Ray, giving quick introductions before diving into the latest updates on the case.
Ray had wasted no time catching up on Ben's situation as soon as he got back to Oak Lake. The cops had already dug up a few leads.
Richard, the lead detective, was a no-nonsense guy in his forties. He spoke seriously, "Rose pointed the finger at Lillian as the main suspect. She told us that back when Lillian was still the Fisher family's adopted daughter, she used to whip up health broths for Mr. Fisher every few days. Mr. Fisher had a routine of starting his day with a cup of iced coffee like clockwork, so we focused our investigation on these habits and found some interesting leads."
Richard handed over a couple of reports to Ray. "These are the lab results for Mr. Fisher's usual coffee cup and the pot used for the broths."
Ray's brow furrowed as he skimmed through the reports. Richard, mindful of the technical jargon, broke it down, "The toxins found in the pot are the same ones that affected Mr. Fisher, which strongly suggests his health broths were poisoned."
"The pot's special material lets toxins seep in during high-heat cooking, and even a thorough wash can't get them all out. But since Mr. Fisher's coffee is iced and the glass mug doesn't hold onto toxins, the tests came back clean."
"We also learned from the staff that Lillian made Mr. Fisher's coffee every morning herself."
Ray's frown deepened as he listened. "What's Lillian saying about all this?"
Richard replied, "She's currently serving time and keeping tight-lipped, not saying a word."
He added, Rose also mentioned that Chris, another suspect in custody, might have a direct link to
this whole mess. We've questioet
him too, but he's not talking either."
"What about the home surveillance?" Ray asked.
"We've gone through it. Nothing out of the ordinary popped up. The
kitchen footage shows Lillian making the broth, but her back's to the camera, so we can't see if she did anything suspicious. There's also nothing weird near the coffee machine. If she did tamper with the coffee, it probably happened in a blind spot."
"And..." Richard hesitated, glancing at Ray.
Ray raised an eyebrow, "Yes?"
Richard hesitated, "When we asked
Rose about Chris and Lillian'snoveldrama
potential motives, she mentioned that you, Mr. Ray, might have the answers, but she couldn't share them."
What do you think?
