The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 544

Josephine was certain that this time, the evidence was irrefutable. Tears began to spill uncontrollably down her cheeks.

"Charles, you swear you'll never cover for Dahlia again. If you go easy on her just because of Sandy, may you never know peace."

In Josephine's eyes, Charles had never been someone she could truly trust.

She hadn't forgotten how he'd exposed Dahlia himself, only to let her off the hook so easily for Sandy's sake.

Eve had hidden things from her, but Josephine wasn't blind.

How could she be sure Charles wouldn't repeat the same mistake again?

"Sandy died last night."

Charles's voice was low and heavy.

"Ms. Josephine, even if Sandy had survived, I wouldn't have let Dahlia off because of her."

Charles's words softened Josephine's expression, if only a little.

At her core, Josephine was a kind person.

But hearing about Sandy's death, she didn't feel the slightest bit of sympathy.

You reap what you sow.

At last, Charles had done the right thing.

He had personally sent the woman who killed Charlie to prison.

In the bustling outpatient lobby, mother and daughter collapsed into each other's arms, weeping.

As much as they were relieved that Charlie's death had finally been avenged, their hearts were still wracked with sorrow.

Vengeance had been served, but Charlie would never come back.

Charles stood silently to the side, watching the two grieving women. His pain was no less than theirs; his eyes were redder than a rabbit's.

Evelyn worried that Josephine's emotions might affect her health.

Facing the only family she had left, Evelyn was terrified of losing her, so she was always careful and considerate.

She was the first to choke back her tears, lifting her head from Josephine's embrace.

Charles watched Evelyn, her eyes swollen and red, her face streaked with tears. He reached out gently with his handkerchief to wipe her tears away.

But before he could touch her, Evelyn coldly brushed him off.

She pulled tissues from her own bag, tenderly dabbing at Josephine's tears first.

Josephine, in turn, gently wiped Evelyn's tears.

Charles's hand froze in midair, then slowly dropped to his side.

Just then, Andrew walked over with the results of Josephine's checkup.

The prognosis was good.

Charles spoke up, "Ms. Josephine, Eve, let me drive you home."

Josephine's voice was icy as she refused. "That won't be necessary."

She knew she had just wrongly accused Charles.

But Josephine didn't feel that the slap she'd given him was undeserved.

All the hurt he'd inflicted on Eve-surely one slap didn't even begin to make up for

it.

Josephine met Charles's gaze, understanding what he was thinking.

Because she understood, Josephine

didn't mince words. "Charles, don't think that just because you put Dahlia in prison, you've earned yourself a free pass, or that Eve will forgive you." noveldrama

"Yes, Dahlia deserved her fate, but you were her accomplice."

"If it weren't for you, would she have ever had the chance to kill Charlie? And would we have had to wait until now to finally get justice for Charlie, to let her rest in peace?"

"Dahlia was cruel, but how much better were you? As Charlie's own father, you never once fulfilled your duty-not for a single day. You ignored her existence for five years."

"All the love that should have been Charlie's, you gave to Sandy. And all the affection that belonged to Eve, you lavished on Dahlia."

"The pain you caused these two women isn't something you can erase with a few empty apologies."

"If you still remember that I once

saved your life, if you truly feel sorry for Eve, then do her this favor: stay away from her. You've already wasted too many years of her life."

"For the rest of her days, she neither needs nor wants you in her life. Leaving her alone is the best way you can repay me, and the only way you can possibly make it up to Eve."

The pain in Charles's eyes was impossible to hide-it nearly spilled over.
