The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 558

Hospital Room

Josephine watched as Evelyn entered the room, hand in hand with Brooks.

She forced herself to suppress the turbulent emotions stirred up by Charles, shifting her attention to Brooks and his injuries.

"Ms. Josephine, please don't worry. It's just a minor injury, nothing serious. Are you feeling alright? Any discomfort?"

"I'm fine," Josephine replied.

Thankfully, none of the three had suffered any real harm.

Brooks immediately instructed his assistant to handle their discharge paperwork.

Soon, the police arrived, having learned that everyone was awake, and began taking their statements.

They updated the trio on the situation.

The fire had been extinguished the night before, and thanks to a timely call to the fire department, it hadn't spread to the neighboring houses.

It was only through the officers that Evelyn and Josephine learned the fire had been set by Dahlia.

"Officer, have you caught her yet?" Evelyn asked urgently.

She remembered the smell of gasoline last night, realizing someone had set the fire deliberately, but she never expected Dahlia to be behind it, stirring up trouble once again.

The memory of that harrowing night still drained the color from Evelyn's cheeks.

Dahlia's existence was like a ticking time bomb.

"She got away, but Ms. Evelyn, please rest assured-we've already issued a warrant. We will bring Dahlia to justice," the officer assured them.

How could Evelyn feel at ease?

Dahlia was unhinged.

She'd managed to escape the psychiatric facility and set fire to Evelyn and her mother's home without a second thought.

Now, seeing that she and her mother were unharmed, Evelyn doubted Dahlia would let things go so easily.

Her mother's health couldn't endure such turmoil again.

After the police left, Evelyn's brows were furrowed, a stormy cloud of worry hanging over her.

She feared what Dahlia might do next.

They were out in the open, while Dahlia was lurking in the shadows-impossible to guard against.

"Evelyn, don't worry. Dahlia won't get another chance to hurt you or your mom," Brooks said quietly, seeing the fear in Evelyn's eyes. He squeezed her cold hand, his voice low and firm.

Evelyn's eyes widened in shock, turning to Brooks. "What do you mean?"

"Brooks, what have you done? Dahlia isn't worth ruining yourself over," Evelyn demanded, her grip tightening on his arm, her tone suddenly severe and hushed.

She hated Dahlia-wanted nothing more than to see her punished-but this was a country of law, and only the legal system should decide Dahlia's fate, not private vengeance.

Josephine grew tense as well. "Brooks, don't be foolish. Don't do anything illegal! Turn Dahlia over to the police immediately!"

"Ms. Josephine, I haven't done

anything. Dahlia isn't in my hands," Brooks replied, holding Evelyn's hand tightly. He meant it

Josephine, but even moreo

Evelyn.

He and Charles had both considered taking matters into their own hands-but knew they couldn't.noveldrama

He didn't hide the truth from them.

The night before, when Brooks arrived, he'd seen Dahlia, just as she was trying to sneak away.

It was obvious who had set the fire.

But with his mind focused on Evelyn and Josephine upstairs, he didn't have time to deal with Dahlia himself. He simply ordered his assistant to follow her.

After getting Evelyn and Josephine to the hospital, Brooks called his assistant.

He learned that Dahlia had stolen everything she could from a male staff member at the psychiatric center. With no legal way out, she was desperately contacting people to help her escape the country.

Brooks allowed his assistant to make things easier for her.

Dahlia found a smuggler to take her out.

She boarded the ship, convinced fate was smiling on her.

Abroad, she'd get a fresh start. The thought of Evelyn dead, Charles in agony,

and herself free to enjoy life made her almost giddy.
