Chapter 1697
Before heading out, she gave Jenny a quick look. "Keep an eye on Kimberly for me until I'm back."
"Sure thing," Jenny replied, nodding as she nudged Chris towards the door. "You'd better stick with Fiona. Things have been messy in the Southeast lately, with all sorts of power struggles. Having you around might just make a difference."
As they made their way to District F, the traffic was way worse than when they were heading to Jenny's place.
"Something's off," Fiona mumbled under her breath.
Seemed like someone had tipped them off.
Fiona quickly gathered her hair into a messy bun. Her usual warm tone was replaced with a cold edge as she spoke to the driver, right when the car came to a halt.
"You head back. Chris, get in the front seat."
The second the driver opened the door, Fiona pushed Chris's head down just in time to dodge a bullet that zipped through the air where their heads had just been.
With a swift move, Fiona pulled a gun from her waist and took out the driver with a shot to the head. In a blink, she slid into the driver's seat. Chris, no stranger to danger, quickly jumped into the passenger seat and buckled up. Fiona floored the gas pedal, and they sped off.
Her right hand gripped the steering wheel while her left held the gun, resting on the window ledge. Her aim was top-notch, only missing due to the bumpy road and the ambush from their pursuers.
"Buckle up," she warned.
With those words, Fiona sent the car barreling down a hill.
Chris was taken aback. Even after all these years, Fiona's driving was still as impressive—and terrifying-as ever.
"Jump!" Fiona shouted out of nowhere.
They rolled down a grassy slope, a spot within District F's boundarynoveldrama
No matter how ruthless their pursuers were they wouldn't dare cross into this territory.
ét
They got to their feet, brushing off the dirt. Fiona glanced back at the scene, mostly cleared up now, except for someone hiding behind a car wheel.
Fiona took aim and shot the guy's legs, drawing a scream of agony.
She didn't take him out completely because she needed him to find Jackson.
They walked over together, stepping into a neutral zone where nobody wanted to start a fight unless they had a death wish.
Fiona kicked him, her voice icy. "Spill it. Who sent you?"
The guy, writhing in pain, tried to reach for his weapon, but Fiona disabled him with shots to both wrists.
"No wonder Jenny said if anyone messes with you, they'd rather eat a bullet than face your wrath."
Chris shook his head. Fiona was amazing, but if you crossed her or touched what she cared about, you were as good as done.
"I can't tell you. I don't know," the guy stammered.
Fiona scoffed, her eyes like ice. "Then go meet your maker."
With a loud bang, she turned away, not bothering to press him further.
Before long, she met the current leader of District F, a young man she and Jasmine had once saved as a kid. All grown up now, he was quite the charming gentleman.
